No one really knows what they are. Only that they're the first civilization. Aeons, they call themselves. They're immortal. Powerful. Secretive. And they'll come for her. Witch Wynter Dellavale knows that for certain. Because in unfairly trying to execute her, they started a chain of events they're struggling to stop. Needing safety, she flees to Devil's Cradle, the home of monsters. A place for the outcasts, the fugitives, the crazies. A place ruled by the Ancients, seven beings who were once banished by the Aeons. Among the Ancients is the infamous Cain, brother of Abel and embodiment of jealousy - who, on another note, wants her in his bed. There's a heavy price for the safety the Ancients offer, but Wynter will have to pay it. She can't take on the Aeons alone. And she has no intention of dying - been there, done that. Not that she'll be the easy prey the Aeons are expecting. They have no knowledge of the ... thing that lives inside her. You see, when witches are brought back from the afterlife, they don't always come back the same. And they don't always come back alone. |
I fell in love with Wynter and Cain, and struggled not to skip ahead to see if any answers would be forthcoming. In true Wright style, we are on the edge of our seats throughout the book. What is Wynter? What is Cain? How does this connect them? Is there going to be a reveal? Will secrets be exposed or kept hidden? The endless questions drove me mad, but for the life of me I couldn't put my Kindle down. I needed to know more and finished this sinfully delicious read in just over a day. I tried to hold off and drag it out but I swear I just couldn't. I love that Suzanne dives straight in from the first page, because it lures you in so fast you cannot help but become invested.
Wynter is the kind of heroine I admire. Sarcastic, witty and takes no shit. Her endless resilience, strength and capacity to still care for others was a beautiful thing. She has not had it easy since she was a child, but she took her second chance at life by the balls and tried so hard to be a strong witch, to show she wasn't broken and was worthy to be a part of the coven. She refuses to let her trauma define and control her. But there really are just some assholes in life who will do anything to squish out your light, and Wynter's' coven is one twisted egotistical bunch of bitches. Despite the covens efforts Wynter survives all odds and with her hilarious but slightly scary group of misfits she makes her way to the Devils Cradle. I think that is my most favourite thing about Wynter, she is a survivor through and through, refusing to be or become a victim. It makes her so much more deadly than those seeking to destroy her could ever imagine. I absolutely adored her group of misfits, and I was caught more times than I can count smiling or flat out laughing while I was reading. The humour factor is as ever strong where Suzanne is concerned. I loved the dynamics of the group, how they looked out for one another and protected Wynter's secret. I would love to know more about them and see if they get their own books.
He wanted her fucking addicted to him. To this. Wanted her to need him like she'd never needed anyone else. Wanted her to come back to him again and again, unable to help herself.
As we delve deeper into Cain and his group, we get a genuinely brilliant depiction of another side to the story of Cain and Abel. I was as invested in the notions Suzanne presents, as I was with the characters. I truly admire an author who can create a world and a narrative that could be somewhat plausible, despite being completely fictional. A contradiction I know, but if you are familiar with her work you will understand the style Suzanne creates is so uniquely her own and incorporates enough reality to make you think. The notion of Cain and Abel existing today and how they slot into the supernatural world and our world was quite thought provoking for me. There was much left unanswered, things still kept hidden and I am impatiently waiting for the next book.
Release is only a short few days away, and I cannot wait for you to all get your hands on Cain and Wynter's story. Get comfy, keep hydrated and sit by the window to cool down. Happy reading minions!
